Vitamin C Supplementation May Improve Male Fertility.

A study done as a collaboration between clinics in New York and Dubai and published in the Journal of Medicinal Food (9, 3: 440-442, 2006), evaluated the effect of oral supplementation of vitamin C on various semen parameters in infertile but otherwise healthy men. This open trial included 13 infertile men ages 25 to 35 that had no genital infection or varicocele. They were given 1,000 mg of vitamin C orally twice daily for a maximum of two months. Various semen parameters, including sperm motility, sperm count, and sperm morphology, were measured before and after the vitamin C treatment. Results showed that the mean sperm count, sperm motility and sperm with normal morphology increased significantly after 2 months of vitamin C supplementation. Researchers stated that their study showed that vitamin C supplementation in infertile men might improve sperm count, motility, and morphology and have a place as an additional supplement to improve the semen quality towards conception.
