Placebo Controlled Study Confirms MSM Benefit in Osteoarthritis.

A study conducted at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences Research Institute and published in the Journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage (2006 Mar;14(3):286-94) found Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) beneficial in reducing pain and physical impairment in Osteoarthritis (OA). Fifty men and women, 40-76 years of age with knee OA pain were enrolled at an outpatient medical center. Subjects received either MSM 3 gm twice daily or placebo for 12 weeks (6g/day total). Subjects were evaluated using standardized measurements of pain, disability, and quality of life.

Compared to placebo, MSM produced significant decreases in pain and physical impairment. MSM also produced improvement in performance of daily activities compared to placebo. Researchers concluded that MSM (6grams daily) reduced symptoms of pain and improved physical function during the short intervention without major adverse effects.
