High Childhood Sugar Intake found to cause Predisposition to Type 2 Diabetes.A study conducted by researchers from the University of Southern California and the University of Alberta and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (82 5:1004-10, 2005) found that obesity and sugar intake increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Researchers assessed body composition, diet, insulin sensitivity (SI), acute insulin response (AIR) and disposition index (an index of beta-cell function) in 63 overweight Latino children aged 9 to 13. After analyzing the data they found that higher total sugar intake, particularly from sugar-sweetened beverages, was unrelated to SI but significantly associated with lower AIR and beta-cell function. Results were independent of test subjects' age, sex, and body composition. The researchers concluded their results suggested that these children already had early signs of poor beta cell function. They added that their results underscore the need for early nutritional interventions to reduce daily sugar intake in children, potentially reducing their risk of contracting Type 2 diabetes. Bio-Design Glucobiotic may be a helpful in promoting normalized blood sugar levels and in inhibiting the long-term damage of chronic high blood sugar.
