Folate Supplementation Found to Help Reduce Alzheimer's Risk.A long-term National Institute on Aging study of diet and brain aging, using data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, found that consumption of folate may significantly reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The study was conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles, with the results due to be published in the inaugural issue of Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association. Researchers analyzed data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging to compare food and supplement intake of men and women age 60 and older who later developed Alzheimer's disease, to the folate intake of those who did not develop the disease. They found that consuming the recommended daily allowance of folate, a B vitamin, may prevent Alzheimer's disease. They also discovered that folate may be more effective in inhibiting the development of Alzheimer’s disease than vitamin E, an antioxidant thought to inhibit the onset of age-related dementia. Researchers found that participants who had folate intakes at or above the 400 mcg Recommended Dietary Allowance had a 55% reduction in their risk of developing Alzheimer's. They also stated that most people who reached a daily consumption level of 400 mcg did so by taking folic acid supplements, which suggests that many people do not get the recommended amounts of folate in their diets. Bio-Design Folic 1000 provides 1 mg or 250% of the Daily Value of folic acid per capsule. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.
