Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplementation found to Promote Health Bone Mineral Density.A study conducted at University of California, San Diego and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (81, 4:934-8, 2005) found that consumption of Omega3 fatty acids appears to help preserve bone mineral density (BMD) in both men and women. The study investigated an association between the ratio of dietary Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids and bone mineral density (BMD). Subjects were 1532 men and women between 45 and 90 years of age who participated in the Rancho Bernardo Study. The current study analyzed dietary data collected between 1988 and 1992 using self-administered food-frequency questionnaires. Subject’s BMD was measured at the hip and spine using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and a report of medical history and current medication use was obtained. Researchers conducted age and multiple-adjusted linear regression analyses. Researchers identified a statistically significant relationship between low BMD and a diet high in Omega 6 consumption relative to Omega 3 intake. The study’s findings were independent of age, body mass index, and lifestyle factors. Researchers concluded that increased Omega 3 fatty acid consumption relative to Omega 6 consumption may play a vital role in preserving skeletal integrity in old age for both men and women. Bio-Design Deodorized Omega-3 is extracted from, wild caught Norwegian anchovy and sardine and processed in a pharmaceutically licensed facility using a proprietary vacuum / steam process to remove the fish odor and taste.
