Study finds HCl Inhibiting Drugs May Increase Risk of Dementia.
A study conducted at the Indiana University Center for Aging Research and published in the August 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (2007;55 (8), 1248–1253) has linked chronic use of H2 antagonist, stomach acid-blocking drugs with an increased risk of cognitive impairment (dementia). Long term H2 antagonist use has previously been linked to increases in the incidence of osteoporosis, pneumonia, macular degeneration, and overgrowth of toxic intestinal bacterial.
This five year longitudinal study tracked 1,558 African American residents of the Indianapolis area, aged 65 and older, who had no cognitive impairment at baseline. During the five year study 275 (slightly more than 17%) of all subjects developed early signs of cognitive impairment, as measured by standardized tests. Subjects who took H2 antagonist, acid-blocking medication were found to have a significantly greater risk of developing cognitive impairment than those who did not. Bio-Acidic provides 660 mg of Betain and Glutamic Hydrochloride per tablet. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.
